Taiwan overtakes China as Singapore's top trading partner

Aug 26, 2026

Taiwan became Singapore's largest goods trading partner for the first time in 2025, a win for Taiwan's chip industry and its push to make itself economically indispensable.

  • Taiwan jumped from Singapore's fourth-biggest trading partner to first, pushing China into second place.
  • Chips drive almost all of it: most of what Taiwan sends Singapore is semiconductors, and most of what comes back is chipmaking equipment and parts.
  • The AI boom is redrawing Asian supply chains, with TSMC handling advanced chips and Singapore doing equipment, packaging and testing.
  • Money is moving too — Singapore is now Taiwan's biggest source of foreign investment, and most Taiwanese offshore wealth has shifted there from Hong Kong.
  • Closer trade has not changed politics: Singapore sticks to the "one China" line, and joint military training with Taiwan has shrunk since 2016.

Outlook: Trade and investment ties should keep deepening, but Taiwan is unlikely to gain any diplomatic or security backing from Singapore.
