Interior immigration enforcement inside the U.S. has effectively been shut down, a bad outcome for the voters who backed Trump mainly to get mass deportations.

• Greg Bovino, who ran Border Patrol until recently, says the deportation push ended after what he calls the "surrender" in Minnesota, when uniformed Border Patrol agents were pulled out of American cities.
• He puts the number of people living in the country illegally at 105 million — a quarter of the population — and says the figure has barely moved since Trump took office.
• Enforcement has been narrowed to "worst of the worst" criminal cases, which he says is far too small to matter and leaves the border weaker, since anyone who slips through faces nothing inside the country.
• The border itself is tighter than it has been in decades, but that is the only part of the promise that was kept, and the wall still was not built.
• Bovino says his security detail and legal protection were pulled after he retired, and that the pressure came from Tom Homan's circle and CBP commissioner Rodney Scott, with donors who want cheap labor pushing behind the scenes.
