Confusion remains over curb and signs along Chinatown loading zone

Aug 26, 2026

A Honolulu curb that shops depend on for deliveries is still marked wrong months after the city agreed to fix it, leaving Chinatown merchants in limbo.

  • The curb in front of Cindy's Lei Shoppe on Maunakea Street was turned into a no-stopping bus stop at the end of May, cutting off deliveries and quick customer pickups.
  • Businesses complained to city leaders, and the bus stop was moved around the corner in July.
  • The curb is still painted red, and two signs a few feet apart contradict each other — one says tow-away at all times, the other says loading zone on weekdays and Saturday.
  • The city says it will repaint the curb yellow as soon as crews free up, blaming the delay on cleanup after Tropical Storm Lala.

Outlook: Merchants expect the yellow loading zone to return once storm cleanup winds down, but no date has been set.
