With registration for the Changhua County magistrate race entering its final countdown, incumbent Wang Hui-mei has yet to appear on stage with Wei Ping-cheng, a candidate from her own party. The rift is said to stem from a land development case that has been mired in controversy for more than a decade — a negative signal for the Kuomintang's electoral prospects.

• Wang Hui-mei has declined to appear alongside Wei Ping-cheng on four occasions, while repeatedly sharing a stage with figures from the Green camp. She departed on a ten-day overseas trip on the 24th, which outside observers have read as a technical way of avoiding campaign duties.
• Wu Yin-ning, deputy executive director of the Executive Yuan's Central Taiwan Office, has publicly stated that the crux of the matter is the development project for the Erlin Precision Machinery Park.
• The project was first proposed during Cho Po-yuan's term as county magistrate and has never passed environmental impact assessment in more than ten years. It would consume over 300 hectares of prime farmland.
• Local opposition rests on a simple argument: the neighbouring fourth phase of the Central Taiwan Science Park still has roughly 300 hectares of undeveloped land, and its industrial profile overlaps with that of the Erlin park. The science park should be filled first before the matter is discussed further.
• Wu Yin-ning also questioned whether Wang Hui-mei's push to advance the project at this moment involves land transactions and property speculation.
