Taiwan's legislature moves session to Aug. 27 ahead of typhoon, drone bill up for final passage
Taiwan's parliament is rushing to pass a big military drone spending bill a day early because a typhoon is heading for the island — a sign defense funding is now moving fast enough to bend the legislative calendar.
- The session set for Aug. 28 was moved up to Aug. 27 so lawmakers and officials can deal with the storm, named Sadel, and with flooding already hitting southern Taiwan.
- All three parties — the ruling DPP, the KMT, and the TPP — agreed to the change without objection.
- The main item is a special law funding homegrown drones: the cabinet wants roughly NT$210 billion, while the KMT is pushing a larger NT$240 billion version spread over six years.
- A proposed change to the referendum law was left off the agenda after the DPP said it had not been fully negotiated.
Outlook: The drone funding law is expected to clear its final reading Aug. 27, locking in a multi-year buildup of Taiwan's domestic drone industry as part of its defense against China.
