Taiwan's Pingtung County has launched a large-scale disaster relief programme following the torrential rain of 22 August, offering substantial support to affected households, vehicle owners and farmers.

• Homes or business premises flooded to a depth of more than 50 centimetres are eligible for a combined central government and county government subsidy of up to NT$45,000; those flooded to less than 50 centimetres receive NT$10,000 from the county government.
• Flood-damaged vehicles also qualify for assistance: NT$20,000 for cars and heavy motorcycles, and NT$2,000 for ordinary scooters. Applications close on 30 September.
• The Ministry of Agriculture has designated Pingtung an all-category cash relief and low-interest loan area. Applications for crop losses close on 7 September and those for the livestock sector on 9 September.
• This is the second time in under two months that torrential rain has severely hit Pingtung, following flooding on 25 June.
• County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi has called for the process to be handled "quickly, simply and generously," with qualifying agricultural losses exempt from on-site inspection.

Outlook: Subsidy applications will close in stages through September, and affected households may also apply for tax reductions on their disaster losses.
