New Taipei will get more money from Taiwan's central government next year, but it still gets the least per person of any city — bad news for a city facing heavy building costs.

• New Taipei's share of the central tax pot rises to about NT$107.5 billion, up NT$10.6 billion from this year.
• Split across its 4 million people, that works out to half of what Taipei City gets per person.
• Mayor Hou Yu-ih says the bigger worry is the central government cutting other grants mid-year with a single notice, which wrecks the city's budget plans.
• New Taipei is eight times the size of Taipei City and is in the middle of a building push, with rail projects alone expected to need another NT$230 billion.
• Population size also drives up spending on schools, welfare, school lunches and senior transit cards.

Outlook: The figure is only an estimate, and the city expects a fight over how much it actually receives once mid-year grant decisions land.
