• In July 2024, a woman surnamed Chen used plastic wrap and a quilt to smother her infant daughter, who had been crying incessantly; the baby was taken to hospital but could not be saved.
• She had long cared alone for a father with liver disease and a mother with dementia, and suffered from severe depression and anxiety disorder, which worsened after both parents died in succession.
• After her daughter was born, the baby had breathing problems and cried frequently, and caring for her day and night left the mother physically and mentally broken.
• The court found the circumstances deserving of compassion, imposing a two-year prison term suspended for five years, with mandatory probationary supervision and participation in an offender treatment programme.
