A court in Pingtung has handed a new mother a suspended sentence for killing her one-month-old daughter, treating severe postpartum mental illness as grounds for mercy.

• The woman smothered her crying infant during a breakdown, then called for help herself; the baby could not be saved.
• She had spent years caring alone for a sick father and a mother with dementia, and both parents died shortly before the birth.
• She was already being treated for severe depression, anxiety and nervous system problems, which flared again after the delivery.
• The baby had breathing trouble at birth and cried constantly, and fears about the child's development pushed her past her limit.
• The court cut the sentence to two years, suspended it for five years, and ordered supervision plus a mandatory treatment program. The ruling can be appealed.

Outlook: Prosecutors can still appeal, and the case is likely to sharpen calls in Taiwan for better postpartum mental health screening and support for caregivers.
