As the race for New Taipei City mayor heats up in Taiwan, KMT candidate Lee Szu-chuan has been accused of overstating his role in the reconstruction following the 921 earthquake, a claim that could hurt his campaign.

• Lee originally wrote on Facebook that in the year of the 921 quake he was serving in Taipei County, helping disaster victims rebuild their homes.
• In fact, he did not take up a post at the Taipei County Government until 2007, more than seven years after the 921 earthquake of 1999.
• After being caught out, the post was quietly changed to read "the year reconstruction began after the 921 earthquake," but the opening line still says "someone has been keeping count for me for 27 years," which still dates the period from 1999.
• DPP New Taipei City councillor Weng Chen-chou pointed out that the collapse of the "Scholar's Home" building in Xinzhuang was handled during Su Tseng-chang's term, with work starting in 2002 and completed in 2004, and had nothing to do with Lee.

Outlook: Questions of this kind about "harvesting a predecessor's record" are expected to keep gathering steam and become a focal point of attack and defence in the New Taipei mayoral race.
