Days of heavy rain triggered a landslide on Taiwan's Alishan Highway, cutting off traffic in both directions for about four hours before crews reopened the road.

• A slope collapsed near the 71K mark on Highway 18 late Tuesday morning, dumping rock and soil across the road.
• Boulders blocked the lanes and punched a hole in the road surface, but nobody was hurt.
• Passing drivers spotted the slide and alerted the highway office, which sent heavy machinery to clear the debris, fill the hole and level the road.
• Traffic was flowing again by mid-afternoon.

Outlook: More slides are likely on this stretch while the heavy rain continues, so drivers are being told to check road conditions before setting out.
