A California girl has quietly become one of Maui's steadiest book donors, good news for Lahaina families still living without their public library.

• Maddie Ellner, 11, has given 2,600 books to Maui Friends of the Library over three years.
• She started after the wildfires burned through Lahaina and destroyed its public library.
• The books either go straight to readers or get sold to raise money for Maui's libraries.
• Maui Friends of the Library plans to run a shipping container in Lahaina as a temporary book pickup spot, stocked partly with her donations.
• Teachers can call and pick up a free box of books.

Outlook: The state is still working to rebuild the Lahaina library, and Maddie says she will keep collecting books at home for next year's trip.
