Taoyuan New Year's Eve Concert May Move to Airport MRT A16; Traffic and Flight Safety Questioned

Aug 24, 2026

Taoyuan City is planning to move its 2027 New Year's Eve concert to a vacant lot next to Hengshan Station (A16) on the Airport MRT line — bad news for both revellers and nearby businesses, since the area currently consists of little more than construction sites and weeds.

  • The site selection sparked heated debate as soon as it was announced, with many people unsure where A16 even is.
  • The land lies within the Aerotropolis land readjustment zone and has few shops, so finding food would be a problem for the 40,000 to 50,000 people expected to pour in.
  • A16 sits right next to Taoyuan Airport, so setting off fireworks raises questions of flight safety and safe distances, while late-night transport for departing crowds is another difficulty.
  • City councillors criticised the fact that the New Year's Eve event has been concentrated in southern Taoyuan and the Qingpu area for nearly nine years, and suggested moving it to the Taoyuan Arts District, where conditions are more established.
  • The city government is standing by A16, citing its large area, the fact that site preparation is already complete and no further land-levelling costs would be needed, and it has promised that the Airport MRT will run without a final departure, along with free shuttle services and free motorcycle parking.

Outlook: the city government has no plans to change venues in the short term, so attention will now turn to whether the supporting measures — traffic dispersal, safe distances for fireworks, and the recruitment of food vendors — can be put in place.
