Days of torrential rain in southern Taiwan have wrecked crops and drowned livestock in Tainan, a heavy blow for farmers just as the pomelo harvest was starting.

• Farm and livestock losses in Tainan reached about NT$8.5 million by late Monday, and are still being counted.
• Watermelons took the worst hit, followed by asparagus, with damage also reported to longan, melons, sesame and other grain crops.
• Flooding at a chicken farm in Rende killed 9,000 birds, and another farm in Jiangjun lost about 20,000 young laying hens.
• Madou pomelo growers had to delay picking because wet soil makes harvesting dangerous and bruises the fruit, though a few rushed to pick during breaks in the rain.

Outlook: Damage totals will likely climb as more reports come in, and the pomelo harvest will slip later unless the weather clears.
