Taiwan's government is moving to fix repeated flooding on a key highway in Pingtung, good news for residents and drivers hit by this summer's heavy rain.

• Pingtung County wants a sixth phase of drainage work on the Dahu system to stop flooding on Provincial Highway 1 near Linluo, at a cost of about NT$1.36 billion.
• Premier Cho Jung-tai inspected the site in pouring rain and told agencies to finish the project in one go rather than piecemeal.
• Rainfall in June and August overwhelmed the existing drains, cutting off the highway and nearby village roads.
• Pingtung is already set to get NT$8.4 billion for river work, bringing total spending to roughly NT$9.7 billion.
• Six smaller emergency projects are still awaiting approval, with only part of the funding cleared so far.

Outlook: Approvals for the remaining emergency work are expected to be sped up, with visible results targeted for next year.
