Sanchong, one of New Taipei's most crowded districts, is getting 208 new parking spaces — good news for drivers who have long struggled to find a spot.

• The new underground garage under Xinghua Park opens tonight at 6 p.m., with free parking during a trial run until Sept. 24.
• Paid operation starts Sept. 25 at NT$30 an hour; monthly passes cost NT$4,000, or NT$3,200 for local residents, with a lottery for spots running Sept. 1–14.
• The project cost about NT$520 million, split between central government funding and the city's own budget, and included widening nearby roads and sidewalks and upgrading the park.
• New Taipei has spent roughly NT$5.4 billion on parking in Sanchong over eight years, building 17 lots with about 4,600 car spaces and 4,100 scooter spaces.
• Mayor Hou Yu-ih said the build-out survived the pandemic, labor and material shortages, price spikes, and repeated failed tenders.

Outlook: More garages are due to finish this year and next, with a lot at Sanchong's social housing site targeted for late 2029.
