Taiwan's new rules force drivers over 70 to renew their licenses, and officials are now going out to rural towns to make it easier for older residents.

• Since May, anyone 70 or older has to renew their car or scooter license, including a health check and a two-hour road safety class.
• Renewed licenses last until 75, and after that drivers have to renew every three years or risk a fine and suspension.
• The Keelung office set up a one-day renewal station at a community center in Jinshan, and 200 older residents showed up before 8 a.m.
• Jinshan needs it: more than a fifth of the town is over 65, and with young people working elsewhere, older residents drive themselves to work, shops, and the doctor.
• Anyone who already did the health check and safety class just brings the old license and walks out with a new one the same day.

Outlook: Expect more of these pop-up renewal events in rural towns as the over-70 renewal deadline pushes through Taiwan's aging areas.
