An Indonesian migrant worker in Taiwan was beaten to death after trying to quit a martial arts club, and prosecutors have now charged the club's manager.

• A young worker went to a club branch in Taichung's Wuri district last September to return his uniform and leave the group.
• The club's 29-year-old manager told him he first had to fight nine members, all ranked above him, one after another.
• Exhausted after those nine fights, he was then made to fight the manager, who broke the rules by kicking him in the jaw.
• He fell backwards, hit his head on the ground, and died two days later from bleeding and swelling in the brain.
• The manager has been charged with causing death through injury and will face a citizen-judge trial in Taichung.

Outlook: The case goes to Taichung District Court, and it is likely to sharpen scrutiny of migrant worker groups operating in Taiwan.
