Hawaii expands Slow Down, Move Over law to cover stranded drivers
Hawaii's roadside safety law now shields any driver stopped on the shoulder with hazard lights on, which is good news for anyone who breaks down on a busy highway.
- The Slow Down, Move Over law took effect in its expanded form on June 5.
- It used to cover only police, fire crews, tow truck operators, and highway workers.
- Now it covers regular drivers stuck on the roadside with their emergency flashers on.
- Drivers passing by have to slow down, and change lanes when it is safe to do so.
- Three stranded drivers were struck and killed on Hawaii roads last year, and 350 people die this way nationwide each year.
Outlook: The governor, Honolulu police, and fire officials are pushing an awareness campaign, since the biggest gap is that most drivers still do not know what the law asks them to do.
