• He has said his ancestors all came from China and that calling China his motherland is fair, and pushed for talks with Beijing on bridge and infrastructure links to Kinmen and Matsu.
• Civic groups warn a bill he co-sponsored on outlying islands could open the door to a Chinese "one country, two systems" test zone near Taiwan's front line.
• He also brushed off a string of scandals around another KMT figure's son running for Taoyuan city council, saying everyone makes mistakes.
