The race for Changhua County Magistrate has formally entered the registration stage. The three main contenders represent the Democratic Progressive Party, the Kuomintang and the independent camp, setting up a three-way contest.

• Registration for the Changhua County Magistrate and county councillor elections runs from August 31 to September 4, with a draw to determine ballot numbers on October 23.
• The DPP's Chen Su-yueh is expected to register jointly on September 2 with the party's nominated county councillor candidates, using the occasion to build momentum for the campaign.
• The KMT's Wei Ping-cheng and independent former Changhua City Mayor Chiu Chien-fu have both chosen to register on September 3, setting up a head-to-head confrontation.
• Wei Ping-cheng will open his campaign headquarters and hold a rally on September 6, and has invited incumbent County Magistrate Wang Hui-mei to appear on stage, hoping she will also take on the role of campaign chair.
• Chen Su-yueh's campaign headquarters will be chaired by Chen Yung-chang, a national policy adviser to the President, while Chiu Chien-fu is sharing the duties among a 10-member team.

Outlook: The campaign will heat up across the board once registration closes. Whether the three camps can consolidate local factions, and whether Wang Hui-mei will publicly back Wei Ping-cheng, will be the key things to watch from here.
