Heavy rain has put southern Taiwan's Tainan on alert for mudslides, forcing hundreds of people out of their homes — a bad night for mountain villages, but so far a precaution rather than a disaster.

• Nonstop heavy rain since Sunday night triggered red mudslide warnings on 18 streams and yellow warnings on 19 more.
• 567 people were moved out by Monday morning; most went to stay with relatives, the rest to shelters.
• District staff went door to door overnight, coaxing elderly residents in the hill areas of Longqi and Nanxi to leave.
• City officials are checking drains, sandbags, flood barriers and pumps in low-lying areas like Rende, Yongkang and Annan.

Outlook: More heavy rain is expected, and officials say they will pull people out early again if the risk rises.
