Su Chiao-hui, the Democratic Progressive Party's candidate for New Taipei mayor, has put forward a package of childcare, housing and labour policy proposals — positive news for dual-income families, renters and grassroots workers.

• She has pledged that, if elected, she will set up a mayoral-level labour policy council to bring together labour policies currently scattered across different city departments.

• On childcare, she wants to bring businesses on board to set up childcare centres, with subsidies of up to NT$1 million and half of any losses covered for the first three years.

• Drop-in childcare capacity at the existing 17 parent-child centres is to be expanded, with night-time childcare services added and a drop-in childcare search platform established.

• The social housing target of 52,000 units will be maintained, pursued through multiple channels including urban renewal, floor area incentives, joint development along MRT lines and the activation of publicly owned land.

• The labour budget is to be increased, labour inspection staffing expanded, and penalties for minimum wage violations reviewed.
