National Freeway 1 to get second Gangshan interchange, work starting as soon as September

Aug 23, 2026

Kaohsiung is adding a new freeway exit to handle traffic from its growing chip industry, good news for commuters and factories in the area but only after years of delay.

  • A second Gangshan interchange on National Freeway 1 will break ground in September or October at the latest.
  • The stretch between Gangshan and Nanzi jams up every rush hour, and the new exit should spread that traffic out.
  • The push came from local industry — nearby industrial parks and the coming Qiaotou science park need better road access.
  • The project cost about NT$4.4 billion and was approved back in 2023, but six failed rounds of bidding held it up for most of last year.

Outlook: A groundbreaking ceremony is being tendered now, with the interchange due to open by early 2030.
