Nantou man charged with murder after girlfriend beaten to death

Aug 24, 2026

A 23-year-old man in Nantou County has been charged with murder under Taiwan's domestic violence law after beating his live-in girlfriend to death and then claiming she hurt herself.

  • The man, surnamed Liu, suspected his girlfriend of seeing someone else and blamed her for his own run of bad luck.
  • An argument in their Puli home turned into hours of punching, kicking and biting, with a wooden chair and bottles used as weapons.
  • He only called for help once she fell unconscious; she died in hospital three days later.
  • He told police she had banged her own head against the wall, but the autopsy found injuries from head to toe, bleeding on the brain and in the abdomen.
  • Her father refused to accept the self-harm story, and prosecutors spent months building the case before filing charges.

Outlook: The case now moves to court, where the autopsy findings will be the core of the prosecution's argument.
