Taiwan's Yunlin County plans to convert its old police bureau building into a county history museum — good news for the preservation of local history and culture, and a plus for residents who want to learn about the area's past.

• The county government is funding the renovation of the building, constructed in 1950, with NT$46.5 million of its own money, with completion expected in February 2028.
• The site witnessed the establishment of Yunlin County and the evolution of its policing system. It was registered as a historic building in 2019 and has stood empty since the police moved into a new building.
• The restoration follows the principles of "restoring the old as old" and minimal intervention, retaining the brick and timber features characteristic of post-war government offices while upgrading water and electrical systems, fire safety, and accessibility facilities.
• The museum will house permanent and special exhibitions, documents and digital archives, and will incorporate the results of the compilation of the "Yunlin County Gazetteer."

Outlook: Construction has already begun, with the next two years devoted to the restoration phase. Once complete, the building will serve as a base for historical research and educational outreach in Yunlin.
