Flooding hits Pingtung's Jiadong and Kanding townships
Heavy rain has left waist-deep water in villages across Pingtung County in southern Taiwan, hitting residents who were already recovering from earlier floods this summer.
- A low-pressure system and southwest winds dumped rain overnight, flooding Wenfeng village in Jiadong and Gangdong village in Kanding.
- In Wenfeng, water reached over a meter deep and covered nearly the whole village, forcing the village chief to hand out supplies by boat.
- High tide made it worse — the Linbian River swelled and water from higher ground drained into the low-lying village with nowhere to go.
- In Gangdong, a road widening project raised one side of Longgang Road, blocking water from reaching the village drainage ditch.
- Residents say every heavy rain brings flooding; one family lost a refrigerator bought to replace the one ruined in June's storm.
Outlook: Water is slowly receding, but villagers want the county to fix the drainage before the next storm, warning that extreme weather could make flooding routine.
