DPP ties KMT's local election candidates to Weng Hsiao-ling's motion to cut and freeze the State Affairs Fund

The Democratic Progressive Party has taken the Legislative Yuan controversy over cutting and freezing the Presidential Office's State Affairs Fund straight into the nine-in-one election campaign at the end of the year — bad news for the blue camp's candidates.

  • Legislators from the KMT and the TPP passed Weng Hsiao-ling's motion to cut and freeze the entire NT$30 million State Affairs Fund of the Presidential Office.
  • The 15,000 boxes of Mid-Autumn Festival gifts that the Presidential Office had planned to purchase from 37 sheltered workshops and disability groups may now not be bought.
  • The DPP has called on legislators running for mayor or county magistrate, such as Chiang Chi-chen and Ko Chih-en, to state whether they too intend to act as a "Weng Hsiao-ling."
  • Chiang Chi-chen and Ko Chih-en were said to have left before the vote without stating a public position; the blue camp responded by stressing that it regularly shows concern for disadvantaged groups, and countered that the DPP has failed to press Taiwan Sugar Corporation over money it owes.
  • Sheltered workshops in Taichung including Shih Fang, Li Da and Maria have already had orders cancelled, becoming the focus of the controversy.

Outlook: The green camp will repeatedly amplify this budget controversy, making it a main line of attack and defense for scrutinizing blue camp candidates in the year-end local elections.
