2027 Taoyuan New Year's Eve party moving to Airport MRT A16 Hengshan station

Aug 24, 2026

Taoyuan's city government plans to hold its 2027 New Year's Eve countdown at an empty lot next to a half-built MRT station, and city councilors say the area is nowhere near ready for a crowd that size.

  • The site sits inside the Aerotropolis redevelopment zone and is still mostly construction fences, weeds, and bare ground with almost no shops or places to eat.
  • Councilors warn 40,000–50,000 people would overwhelm the single MRT line, repeating last year's problems with poor signage, confusing fireworks viewing spots, and flooded ground.
  • The airport is right next door, so the fireworks raise flight-safety questions on top of the late-night crowd problem.
  • Some councilors want the party moved to Taoyuan's arts district instead, where restaurants, hotels, and transport already exist.
  • Tourism officials are defending the choice, saying the 7-hectare lot is already levelled, needs no extra prep money, and has the open space that denser neighborhoods lack.

Outlook: The city is sticking with the A16 site for now and promises all-night MRT service, free shuttles, and food vendors, but pressure to reconsider will likely continue.
