Penghu flights disrupted by aircraft breakdown and unstable weather

Aug 23, 2026

Travelers heading off Taiwan's Penghu islands are stuck, with dozens on standby after a plane broke down and bad weather grounded more flights.

  • A Mandarin Airlines plane developed a mechanical fault at Kaohsiung airport in the morning, throwing the day's Penghu schedule into chaos.
  • Two flights out of Penghu — one to Taipei, one to Kaohsiung — were disrupted, affecting nearly 150 passengers.
  • Bad weather delayed or cancelled six more flights to the main island, and about 46 people were still waiting for seats by mid-afternoon.
  • Seats were already scarce because Penghu is hosting a beach music festival and a national softball tournament at the same time.
  • The airline is moving people onto other flights while aviation authorities, the local airport, the county tourism office and a legislator's office coordinate the backlog.

Outlook: The backlog should clear once the aircraft is repaired and weather settles, but seats will stay tight while the island's summer events run.
