KMT infighting over funding for overseas delegations
A dispute inside Taiwan's opposition KMT over who gets money for foreign trips has spilled into public view, an embarrassment for party chair Cheng Li-wun.
- The KMT asked a government-linked democracy foundation to fund chair Cheng Li-wun's delegations to China and the United States, but the money has not arrived yet.
- Lawmaker Weng Hsiao-ling wanted more than NT$2 million for her own trip to Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic, and the party turned her down.
- Party officials said the two Cheng trips already used up the available funding, leaving nothing for her group.
- Weng denies being upset, says she cut her request and then withdrew it, and notes the trip was called off anyway over scheduling.
- Taiwan's legislature has also trimmed overseas travel budgets, tightening what lawmakers can spend on foreign visits.
Outlook: The delayed reimbursements and questions over who approved what are likely to keep drawing scrutiny of how the KMT funds its foreign travel.
