KMT Has Become "Weng Hsiao-ling-ized": Citizen Congress Watch Calls for Voters to Replace Them in November

Aug 22, 2026

Taiwan's opposition blue-white camp has come under fierce criticism over controversial proposals by legislator Weng Hsiao-ling, spelling bad news for the upcoming nine-in-one local elections.

  • Weng Hsiao-ling described the culture budget as "feed for the blue birds" and proposed deep cuts to the president's state affairs fund, which in turn cost sheltered workshops their Mid-Autumn Festival gift box orders.
  • Citizen Congress Watch stated bluntly that "the KMT has become Weng Hsiao-ling-ized," saying it is not enough to blame a single sponsor — those truly deserving condemnation are the blue-white legislators who raised their hands in support of the proposals.
  • The DPP has already named eight KMT legislators running for mayor or county magistrate, including Ko Chih-en, Chiang Chi-chen, Hsieh Lung-chieh and Chen Yu-chen, framing the local elections as a vote of confidence in the party as a whole.
  • The controversy has also spread to the at-large legislator system, with the public frustrated that such legislators cannot be recalled and some even calling for the system to be abolished; Citizen Congress Watch, however, argues that what should be replaced is the party that nominates such people.
  • Chiang Wan-an and Chang San-cheng, both seeking re-election, have kept silent throughout and have likewise been added to the list of those who should be voted out.

Outlook: The November local elections will become a referendum on the performance of the KMT and the TPP in the Legislative Yuan, and the budget controversy will not cool down any time soon.
