Heavy rain floods roads across Pingtung County

Aug 23, 2026

Nonstop rain has flooded roads and forced evacuations across Pingtung in southern Taiwan, a bad day for residents in low-lying and mountain villages.

  • A southwest air flow is dumping rain on Pingtung, with several townships past 200mm by midday.
  • Work and school were called off, and 61 people have been moved out of Wandan and Manzhou.
  • Roads are underwater in several villages, a mudslide cut off Nanshi in Shizi Township, and trees have come down.
  • Ferries between Donggang and Xiaoliuqiu are cancelled today and tomorrow because the river mouth is too rough.
  • County chief Chou Chun-mi toured flood-control projects, pointing to a NT$3 billion drainage program approved after Typhoon Gaemi and a new pumping station on the way.

Outlook: Mountain areas could see up to 800mm total, and a stretch of Highway 24 may be closed as a precaution over rockslide risk.
