Flooding in Pingtung as county leaders inspect flood defenses
Heavy rain from a southwest air flow has flooded roads across Pingtung County in southern Taiwan, shutting schools and offices and putting residents on alert.
- Days of downpours have left several roads under water, with work and classes called off for the day.
- County magistrate Chou Chun-mi toured flood-prone areas in Nanzhou and Jiadong to check drainage and flood-control work.
- A stalled drainage bottleneck on the Donggang River is being rerouted over a 4-kilometer stretch to move water faster.
- Jiadong is getting a second large pumping station next to its existing one, with construction due to start by year-end.
Outlook: Wind and rain are expected to peak over the next two days, and people are being told to stay home unless they have to travel.
