Chen Shih-chung urges bigger denture subsidies for poor New Taipei seniors; Su Chiao-hui agrees
A New Taipei mayoral campaign promise on dental care for poor seniors just got much bigger, good news for low-income older residents and for dentists.
- DPP New Taipei mayoral candidate Su Chiao-hui raised her denture subsidy plan on the spot at a dentists' support group launch.
- Low-income seniors would get up to NT$120,000 and near-poor households up to NT$80,000, well above the NT$50,000 originally proposed.
- Cabinet minister Chen Shih-chung, a dentist by training, pushed for the increase, saying the poorest patients have the worst teeth and cannot afford care even with national health insurance.
- Su called it a win-win: more patients in clinics, better nutrition, and lower long-term health insurance costs.
Outlook: The pledge only takes effect if Su wins the New Taipei mayoral race, making senior dental care a live campaign issue.
