Two Officials in Chiang Wan-an's Team Implicated in Cases; Councillor Questions Pre-Election Distancing
Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an's city government team has faced a succession of reports of officials implicated in corruption and leaking confidential information, dealing a heavy blow to its image ahead of the election.
- Lin Yu-yi, director-general of the Feitsui Reservoir Administration, was searched over alleged corruption, released on NT$300,000 bail with a travel ban, and dismissed the following day.
- This is the second case within a month, coming after former spokesperson Li Cheng-hsuan resigned and was released on bail over a leak in a Taichung City Government procurement case.
- DPP councillor Hsu Shu-hua noted that Lin Yu-yi was a first-tier department head appointed on Chiang Wan-an's first day in office, and that responsibility for the appointment cannot be shrugged off.
- The city government's Department of Government Ethics reported the matter to the mayor as early as 17 August, but no action was taken until the 21st, and what happened in between has not been explained.
- Hsu Shu-hua has called on the city government to submit a special report to the council within a month, disclosing the scope of its review and the results of the audit of the Feitsui Reservoir Administration's public funds.
Outlook: Under pre-election pressure, whether the city government releases the full results of its review will determine whether this episode amounts to accountability or damage control.
