Taoyuan police crackdown nets 30 in drug-driving sweep
Taoyuan police ran a citywide night sweep against drug and drunk driving, a win for road safety but a sign of how common drugged driving has become.
- Police checkpoints and patrols across trouble spots led to 30 people being sent for prosecution in the Pingzhen district alone.
- One driver going the wrong way down a street rolled his car into a police cruiser during the stop, then tested positive for the sedative etomidate; a vape containing the drug was found beside him.
- A 64-year-old man riding a scooter with no license plate was stopped and also tested positive — his plate had already been seized in April for the same offense.
- In the Dayuan district alone, August has brought dozens of fraud, drug, and public-danger cases and dozens of wanted suspects picked up.
Outlook: Police say the sweeps will continue, so more late-night checkpoints and arrests are likely in the weeks ahead.
