Taiwan scrap metal firm accused of laundering over NT$10 billion; seven detained

Aug 21, 2026

Taiwanese prosecutors have broken up an alleged money-laundering ring built around a scrap metal company, in one of the island's larger tax fraud cases in recent years.

  • Jiahong Metal is accused of moving more than NT$10 billion through dozens of shell companies and layered bank accounts.
  • Fake invoices were allegedly used to hide the real deals and cash flows, with over NT$500 million in tax dodged or falsely claimed back as refunds.
  • Investigators raided sites with 73 search warrants, hauled in 37 people, and found cash stacked in bricks across a tabletop.
  • Nearly NT$50 million in cash and four Lamborghinis were seized, and prosecutors asked the court to freeze another NT$360 million in assets.
  • The company boss, his wife, who handled finances, and five other core members are being held without visitors over flight and evidence-tampering risk.

Outlook: The case now moves toward formal charges for organized crime, tax fraud, and money laundering, with more asset seizures likely as prosecutors trace the offshore money.
