Taiwan foreign minister meets Belize civil service and disaster response minister
Taiwan is using a ministerial visit from Belize to lock in one of its few remaining diplomatic allies, a modest but positive step for both sides.
- Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung hosted Belize's civil service and disaster management minister Henry Usher during a week-long visit to Taipei.
- Taiwan plans a new training academy with the University of Belize, sending Taiwanese teachers to train locals in tourism, nursing, food science, and smart farming.
- Taiwan is also pushing its own companies to invest in Belize and buy Belizean goods.
- The two countries have had formal ties for 37 years, with past projects in farming, scholarships, public health, and infrastructure.
- Usher toured Taiwan's civil service colleges, disaster response agencies, and a robotics and automation expo.
Outlook: Expect more Belizean officials in Taipei and further education and training deals as Taiwan works to keep its small circle of allies from drifting toward Beijing.
