Pro-KMT Threads pages traced to Hong Kong, DPP calls for foreign interference probe
A batch of Taiwanese social media accounts backing KMT candidates turned out to be posting from Hong Kong, raising fresh worries about Chinese meddling ahead of Taiwan's local elections.
- Several Threads pages supporting Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an, Tainan candidate Hsieh Lung-chieh, and Hualien candidate Yu Shu-chen showed Hong Kong as their location.
- Once users reported them, the location flipped to "not shared" — and one page shut down entirely after the candidate said it was never authorized.
- Threads sets location from device signals and IP, not user input, so a genuine local supporter would have no reason to show up offshore.
- DPP lawmaker Lin Chu-yin wants prosecutors, the justice ministry, and national security agencies to investigate under Taiwan's anti-infiltration law.
- One page claiming to be a Hualien local used mainland Chinese pinyin in its account name.
Outlook: Expect pressure on Taiwanese agencies to open a formal probe, and more scrutiny of fake or borrowed accounts as the election nears.
