Oahu pup inspires local gourmet dog food line
A picky Goldendoodle led two Honolulu scientists to launch a fresh, locally made dog food brand that is now selling fast on Oahu — good news for local pet owners and local ranchers and farmers.
- Kenyon Sparks and Forrest Franzosi started cooking for their dog Oscar because almost no fresh dog food is made in Hawaii and mainland brands would not ship there.
- Their brand, Good Boy, moved out of the home kitchen into a commercial kitchen in Wahiawa and now offers three recipes.
- The meals use local beef heart, beef liver, local ahi and local vegetables, and were checked by a vet nutritionist for balance.
- The company delivers to nearly every neighborhood on Oahu and says demand has been strong, with picky dogs cleaning their bowls.
- Good Boy is on display at the 32nd Annual Made in Hawaii Festival, which runs through the weekend.
Outlook: Expect the brand to pick up more customers over the festival weekend, with island-wide delivery the main way it grows next.
