Lee Ssu-chuan canvasses for votes at Banqiao's Chaoyang Market, again floats plan for large teaching hospital

Kuomintang New Taipei mayoral candidate Lee Ssu-chuan campaigned door-to-door in Banqiao, making healthcare infrastructure his central policy pitch — good news for Banqiao residents, and pressure on his rivals in the race.

  • Lee went stall by stall at Banqiao's Chaoyang Market shaking hands and asking for votes, with vendors presenting him with zongzi, pineapples, garlic shoots and other good-luck items while chanting "dongsuan" ("get elected").
  • Banqiao is the most populous administrative district in Taiwan, with roughly 550,000 residents, making it a key vote bank in the New Taipei mayoral race.
  • He put forward five major healthcare policies, centred on consolidating the land at the Banqiao branch of the New Taipei Municipal Hospital with the site freed up by the relocation of the Public Health Bureau, and using a BOT model to bring in a large teaching hospital.
  • The new hospital would include a women's and children's section, cancer screening, a rehabilitation centre, night-time emergency services and long-term care accommodation, with the aim of establishing a "Greater Banqiao healthcare living circle."
  • Several legislators, city councillors and councillor candidates joined him on the campaign trail, signalling that the pan-blue camp is coordinating its campaign support in Banqiao.

Outlook: Healthcare infrastructure is set to become the main policy battleground in this New Taipei mayoral race, and more concrete plans are expected before election day.
