Kaohsiung green corridor draws nearly 1,000 scooter tickets in two years
A popular walking park in Kaohsiung has become a shortcut for scooter riders, and police enforcement alone has not stopped it — bad news for people on foot and on bikes.
- The green corridor in Kaohsiung's Gushan district was built for walking and rest, with ramps added so wheelchair users could get in easily.
- Scooter riders now use those same ramps to cut through the park on their way to a nearby market, putting walkers and cyclists at risk.
- Police have issued 982 tickets since the start of 2024, with fines running up to NT$1,800, and say the worst spots are a handful of streets feeding into the park.
- City agencies have installed barriers at eight entry points to physically block scooters, with more planned.
- Residents want warning signs instead of railings, worried that solid barriers would shut out wheelchair users.
Outlook: Police are looking at adding camera-based automatic enforcement, while the city keeps adding barriers at park entrances.
