Kaohsiung family of three hospitalized after eating wild mushrooms
A family in Kaohsiung got sick after eating wild mushrooms picked from a grassy field, and health officials are warning people not to gather mushrooms that sprout after rain.
- Three people ate unidentified white mushrooms a friend had picked outdoors and cooked them at home.
- All three got diarrhea, dizziness, headaches and vomiting the same night; one was sick enough to be hospitalized.
- Officials believe the culprit is the green-gilled parasol, a common poisonous mushroom in Taiwan.
- The mushroom's gills start out white and only turn greenish as it matures, so it is easy to mistake for an edible kind.
- Hot, rainy weather in southern Taiwan is making poisonous mushrooms sprout in open ground and low-lying areas.
Outlook: Health authorities are pushing a simple rule while the wet season lasts — don't pick wild mushrooms, don't eat them, don't give them away.
