Chinese state media unit "Yan Xin Tai" behind Peng Wen-cheng's pro-Beijing turn and attacks on Yakuita Akio
Taiwan has identified a Chinese state media studio as the engine behind a string of pro-unification messaging campaigns aimed at the island — a sign that Beijing's influence operations are getting more targeted.
- Former Taiwanese media figure Peng Wen-cheng appeared on Chinese state media pledging to push for unification "at any cost" within his lifetime.
- The clip was launched by "Yan Xin Tai," a studio under China News Service set up in 2025 purely for messaging aimed at Taiwan, then spread to other Chinese outlets and social media before Taiwanese media picked it up.
- Its tactic is to use Taiwanese voices rather than official spokesmen — amplifying opposition politicians, pro-Beijing influencers, and celebrity interviews to make the message sound homegrown.
- The same studio ran the smear campaign against analyst Yakuita Akio after he was attacked by a Chinese man in Taichung, framing him as a link between Japan's right wing and Taiwan independence forces.
- Taiwanese security officials say the playbook also includes pushing Taiwan Affairs Office talking points, normalizing united front work, and attacking the ruling DPP's "resist China, protect Taiwan" line.
Outlook: Expect more Taiwanese-sounding voices carrying Beijing's message as this model proves harder to spot than traditional state propaganda.
