Wu Hsiu-hua's Women's Support Group Launches in Taitung

Aug 21, 2026

Kuomintang Taitung County magistrate candidate Wu Hsiu-hua held the inaugural meeting of her women's support group in heavy rain. The Wu family's popularity remains undiminished, a positive sign for her campaign.

  • Three to four hundred women turned out despite the rain, and Wu Hsiu-hua put forward six major pledges to women, ranging from childbirth and childcare to entrepreneurship and safety.
  • Wu Hsiu-lan, the eldest Wu sister who rarely appears in public, made an appearance and warmly greeted supporters; she is said to be chair of the Fushan Beautiful Sea View Nursing Center.
  • With the Wu family's business holdings recently coming under outside scrutiny, Wu Hsiu-hua stated that she would run a "positive campaign" and would not engage in smear tactics.
  • Incumbent County Magistrate Yao Ching-ling has taken up the post of chair of the campaign headquarters, publicly declaring that county governance would be passed "from one runner to the next" to Wu Hsiu-hua.
  • A complaint filed against Yao Ching-ling over her participation in the Straits Forum has been laid to rest following a response from the Mainland Affairs Council and a clarification from the county government.

Outlook: Wu Hsiu-hua is expected to retain the backing of the incumbent county government team, and will roll out policy proposals on social welfare, agriculture, tourism and healthcare in the period ahead.
