Kuomintang Taitung County magistrate candidate Wu Hsiu-hua has established a women's support group, and the Wu family's popularity, on display in the rain, is a positive signal for her campaign.

  • Wu Hsiu-hua put forward six pledges to women, focusing on support for childbirth, long-term care, employment and entrepreneurship.
  • Three to four hundred women turned out despite heavy rain, a clear demonstration of the Wu family's mobilisation capacity.
  • Wu Hsiu-lan, the eldest of the Wu sisters and rarely seen in public, attended; she is said to be chair of the Fushan Beautiful Sea View Nursing Care Centre.
  • With the Wu family's business holdings under scrutiny of late, Wu Hsiu-hua stated she would run only a "positive campaign" and would not resort to smear tactics.
  • Incumbent county magistrate Yao Ching-ling serves as chair of the campaign headquarters and has called for "county governance to be passed on baton by baton," a strong signal of a handover.

Outlook: The businesses run by the Wu family and the family's influence are expected to remain the main focus of attack and defence in the Taitung County magistrate race.
