With Lu Shiow-yen's term winding down, progress on Taichung's Pop Music Center and Shuinan Dome criticised as stalled
Delays to major cultural and sports construction projects in Taichung are bad news for residents waiting for the venues to open and for the concert industry, and they leave the next mayor to pick up the pieces.
- The Taichung Pop Music Center was completed back in 2020 but still cannot open, leaving residents waiting for nearly six years.
- The Shuinan Super Dome is still in the BOT tendering process, and its target completion and opening date has already slipped from 2030 to 2031.
- The Democratic Progressive Party caucus in the city council criticised Lu Shiow-yen with the quip that "the Pop Music Center is still adrift and the dome is still being hatched," saying she has made grand promises with nothing to show for them.
- The city government explained that the music centre has been held up because the operator's budget was revised upward from just over NT$400 million to more than NT$600 million, and said it still hopes to open by the end of the year.
- The same kind of delay has also affected the Taichung MRT Blue Line, with the construction work all left for the next administration to handle.
Outlook: With only a few months left in Lu Shiow-yen's term, it is all but certain that both venues will have to be completed by the next mayor.
