Taiwan passes school health law update: free period products, e-cigarette ban, mental health classes
Taiwan's legislature approved changes to the School Health Act that push schools to hand out free period products, teach mental health, and ban e-cigarettes — good news for students and parents.
- Schools will now be helped to stock free period products and teach students about menstruation.
- All schools up to high school are banned from selling or allowing e-cigarettes and new tobacco products, on top of the existing smoking ban.
- Health classes must now cover healthy eating and mental health, including teaching students to notice their own warning signs.
- Schools get power to limit items that harm student health, such as screens and sugary drinks, and health teachers must keep training.
- Lawmakers added five side resolutions, including better classroom air monitoring and asking students for input when planning school toilets.
Outlook: The education ministry now has to write the budget, rules, and guidelines that decide how quickly schools actually see the changes.
