Taiwan High Court clears lawmakers Chen Chao-ming and Hsu Yung-ming in SOGO bribery case
Taiwan's High Court has thrown out bribery convictions against four people in the long-running SOGO corruption case, a win for the acquitted lawmakers and a setback for prosecutors.
- Sitting lawmaker Chen Chao-ming and former lawmaker Hsu Yung-ming were found not guilty on appeal, along with two aides.
- The lower court had jailed them for taking or agreeing to take money from businessman Lee Heng-lung, who wanted help clawing back control of the SOGO department store chain.
- The High Court said there was no proof the money and political donations were traded for official favors like hosting hearings or pressuring economy ministry officials.
- Two other former lawmakers, Su Chen-ching and Liao Kuo-tung, lost their appeals and keep prison terms of 10 years and 8-plus years.
- Chen returned to the legislature the same day and was greeted with handshakes from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.
Outlook: Prosecutors can still appeal the acquittals to Taiwan's Supreme Court, so the case is not over.
